Weekend of July 9 + 10

Welcome home, Challenge Students & Leaders!

This weekend we welcome home our 66 students and leaders who are fresh off a memorable week in Louisville, KY, where they and 5000 other students attended the Challenge Conference. Their 11.5 hour trip (692 miles in one direction, by the way the bus flies), was dotted with worship and teaching by incredible musicians and teachers, spending an afternoon impacting the people of Louisville by helping clean up their city, and going through a missional experience called “Love Moves” in which they learned about mission efforts and opportunities in Brazil. They also fit in plenty of downtime recreation, including basketball and dodgeball and a trip to Six Flags theme park on the way home. Our Students are full, challenged, bonded, and exhausted. We thank you for your prayers in their absence, and we covet your willingness to pray for their continued growth as servant missionaries upon returning to “real life” back home.

July Book Club meets this week

Do you enjoy the story of Ruth, Naomi and Boaz? How about if it were set in Scotland in 1745 during the Jacobite uprising led by Bonnie Prince Charlie? If you can appreciate a unique combo of the book of Ruth, entwined with historical fiction, then you will enjoy our July book, Here Burns my Candle, by Liz Curtis Higgs. We’ll meet July 12, 6:45 pm, in the Fireside Commons. Please join us!

Join our mission (membership)

Membership is important at Five Oaks. It’s a way of saying, “I want to be part of the mission of this local church.” If you have a personal relationship with Christ and have completed Story of God (the class or in your small group), make plans to come to the next membership class on July 17, 9:15-10:30 am, in room 101. Please RSVP by emailing Pam Hawley at phawley@fiveoakschurch.org.

Karen backpack drive coming up soon

Our annual backpack drive benefits Karen refugee families. Many of the Karen families are new arrivals to the U.S. and do not have the resources to purchase school supplies for their children. The Karen VBS Team will deliver filled backpacks to the Brittany Apartments on Tuesday, August 9. Starting July 16, pick up a card/shopping list for a student at the Impact table and go shopping. Our goal this year is to provide for 300 students! Filled backpacks are due back by Sunday, July 31 at noon. For more information contact Pam Hawley, phawley@fiveoakschurch.org.

It happened again

Since we last purged it in May, our Lost and Found is once again brimming. This time it’s loaded with winter and spring coats, both for kids and adults. Please check in at Guest Services if you have lost something recently. All unclaimed items will be donated July 31.
